How do I use assignments?

You can use the assignment tool to easily publish and check assignments. Click on ‘Assignments’ in the navigation bar. You land on the Assignments homepage. Here you see all the assignments you have created.With the buttons on the top of the screen you can perform your actions:  

  • Click on ‘New Assignments’ to create a new assignment.
  • Click on ‘Edit Categories’ to manage or create categories.
  • Click on ‘More Actions’ for more options.
  • Use Bulk Edit if you want to change the name, category, access and deadline for several assignments. Click on ‘Bulk Edit’. Change the desired settings and click on ‘Save’.  Underneath you are able to see several columns.  
  • Underneath Assignments you see the list with all the assignments grouped per category.
  • Underneath New Submissions you find the submitted assignments that have not been assessed. By clicking on the grade in the column you will see the yet to be assessed assignments.
  • Underneath Completed you can see how many students submitted the assignments.
  • Underneath Evaluated you can see how many of the students) or one of your other teachers/reviewers) have evaluated this assignment.
  • Underneath Feedback Published you can see how many of the submitted assignments (or one of the other teachers/reviewers) have published the evaluation.
  • Underneath Due Date you can see the deadline for submitting the assignment (if you have set this up). 

Behind the name of the assignment you see an arrow and one or more symbols. The symbols are dependent on the choices you have made when creating the assignment. Move with your mouse on the symbols for more information about what they mean. In the image below you see examples of icons: 

  • Eye icon: the assignment is invisible for students.
  • Organogram icon: there are release conditions to the assignments.
  • Group icon: it concerns a group assignment.
  • Key icon: there are students with special access to this assignment.
  • Rosette icon: there is a score item connected to the assignment.  

Click on the arrow behind an assignment to open the Mini Menu.Here are multiple options for managing the Assignment.

Categories menu 

Behind the names of the categories, you see two symbols: With the pencil you change the name of the category. With the trashcan you throw away the category; the category is deleted from your category list. The assignments in this category automatically get replaced with No Category.Click on the arrow behind the name of the assignment to open the Mini Menu.Click on ‘Submission Log’ to see the submitted files in the assignment. Click on ‘Edit Assignment’ to edit the settings of the assignment. Click on Hide for users to make the assignment invisible for students. They can no longer submit their work. Every assignment is automatically hidden until you check the box that makes it visible. At Data and conditions accessibility you can set up that the assignment is visible from a certain date. Click on ‘Delete Assignment’ to delete the assignment.You can recover deleted assignments via the Submission Log. Click on ‘Copy assignment’ to copy the assignment. Score items and submitted files are not copied automatically. When you copy an assignment, you will arrive in an edit screen of the copied assignment. This assignment is automatically on Invisible for students, so you have to make this assignment visible for students first. Click on ‘Submission Log’ to see if and when a student has submitted their work. 

More Actions Menu 

Click on ‘More Actions’ to open the menu.Click on ‘Reorder’ to change the order of the assignments. Click on ‘Event Log’ to look at the Event Logbook. This keeps track when you: Made an assignment (Made), Delete an assignment (Deleted), Restored an assignment (Restored). Click on ‘Make visible for users’ to make the selected assignments visible for students. Click on ‘Hide for Users’ to make the selected assignments invisible to students. Click on ‘Delete’ to delete the selected assignments.

Submission Log  

You can go to the Submission Log in two ways. Either you click on the assignments homepage on the arrow next to the name of the assignments you want to view and select Submission Log.Or you click on the assignments homepage on the name of the assignment that you want to view. Click on ‘Submission Log’.The Log keeps track of files per assignment: which student (Submission), what happened with the assignment (Started), who submitted, restored or deleted the assignment (Submitted, Restored, Deleted), when the assignment is Submitted, Restored or Deleted (Date). Filter the results that you want to see by clicking on: ‘Submitted’: all submitted files, ‘Deleted’: all deleted files, ‘Restored’: show all restored files, ‘Started’: show all starting times of all the uploads. If you don’t click on filter options, you see all the files in this assignment. If you want to recover a deleted file, you can do this instantly by clicking on ‘Restore’.
