How do I assess an assignment with inline feedback?
In Brightspace it is possible to give feedback directly inside a document that a student submitted. This way, you can provide notes or highlight sentences, for example.
In the yellow bar on the top of your screen, go to ‘Tools’ > ‘Assignments’.
Select the assignment you want to give feedback on.
On the screen you see now, you can click on the ‘Submissions’ button to see all the documents that students have handed in. Here, you can select the relevant submission that you want to grade or give feedback on.
The screen shown below now appears. On the left you can see the document that the student submitted and at the top of the document there is a tool bar.
On the right of the toolbar there is an icon of a pen. By clicking on it, you can see the different ways to give inline feedback.
The options are as follows, from left to right:
- ‘Drawing’: this way you can draw directly on the document or highlight text
- ‘Note’: this allows you to provide notes on the document
- ‘Text’: this way you can write text directly on the document
- ‘Line’: this enables you to draw lines and other shapes

After providing all the desired feedback and the grade, you can click on ‘Publish’ on the bottom of the screen. Now, your feedback as well as their grade is visible to the student
